Welcome to Camelot Freemasonry

Understanding the basics

Masons, or Freemasons, are members of the oldest and largest fraternity in the world. Freemasonry in its current format originated in the late 16th or early 17th century. Freemasonry has over two million members which have included kings, presidents, scholars, and religious figures.

Freemasonry is founded on a commitment to support each other in friendship, fellowship and service to mankind. For thousands of years, people have found spiritual and philosophical fulfilment through freemasonry, which still operates on the same core values.

Freemasonry itself, is still widely misunderstood. Much negative press exists, mainly attributed to the lack of understanding and the way modern press has sensationalised its news stories.

Freemasonry is a society of like-minded people who meet regularly in a fraternal and social environment. We share a common desire to give charitable support to the community and attach importance to a high moral code. It was founded as a male-only society, though there are now parallel Orders of Women Freemasons in the UK and abroad.

The three key principles of Freemasonry are Neighbourly Concern, Charity and Moral Standards. Camelot refer to these as Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth.

Why become a freemason?

“Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest and largest non-religious, non-political, fraternal and charitable organisations. Its roots lie in the traditions and ceremonies of the medieval stonemasons who built our cathedrals and castles. Some rituals are still celebrated today.
